Considered as the most beautiful U.S. coin ever made, the $20 double eagle coins produced between 1907 and 1933 are also known as the Saint-Gaudens double eagle coins.
In 1907 at the request of President Roosevelt, the renowned American sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens presented a stunning new design based on the ancient Greek high-relief coins to replace the Liberty Head double eagles minted since 1849. The new design features the Lady Liberty striking forward with a torch in her right hand, and an olive branch in her left on the obverse of the coin. The reverse side features a flying eagle in sunrise.

The earlier 1907 gold double eagle coins were made with high relief in order to convey every exquisite detail of the coin. However because of the technical difficulty involved in striking high-relief double eagle coins, as well as complaints received from banks of not being able to stacked correctly, the Mint substituted with lower relief versions later in 1907. In addition, the Roman numerals of the mint year were replaced by the Arabic numerals for more convenience.
